Unsealed FERC Evidence Supports California's Claim For $9 Billion In Refunds From Power Companies

The Office of the Attorney General made 1,770 pages of testimony and evidence supporting California's claim for $9 billion in refunds available to the public after the Federal Regulatory Commission unsealed the documents in March 2003.

"Finally, Californians will be able to see first-hand the overwhelming evidence we have developed that shows how the energy companies ripped us off through a coordinated, pervasive $9 billion get-rich scheme conducted under cover of darkness," the Attorney General said. The Attorney General petitioned FERC to have the documents unsealed.

The materials previously kept secret by FERC were submitted at the end of a 100-day discovery process by the California parties - including the Attorney General's Office, Southern California Edison, Pacific Gas & Electric Co., the California Public Utilities Commission and the Electricity Oversight Board.

The materials providing new evidence of the widespread withholding of power and Enron-type manipulation that affected 85 percent of the wholesale electricity market include:
