JUNK MAIL
Trying to cut down on the "junk" mail flowing into your home? Here are some steps you can take:
Write to the Direct Marketing Association (DMA), a national trade association of direct marketing companies, to ask that your name be removed from mailing lists. Your letter should include your name, home address, and signature. Also note any variations on the spelling of your name or address. Send your letter to:
Mail Preference Service Direct Marketing Association P.O. Box 643 Carmel, NY 10512-0643
This "do not mail" file is updated monthly and distributed four times a year -- January, April, July, and October (some mailers receive the file monthly). Your name remains on file for five years, after which time you may register again. Also, be aware that not all companies use DMA services so you may still receive mail from other companies, especially those operating locally within your area.
Another way to reduce junk mail is to avoid giving out your name and address unless you know how those lists will be used. Avoid "Sign Up To Win Contests" and similar entreaties that frequently are used to generate mailing lists for use or sale to other companies.
