Fingerprint Submissions Criminal Records Review

Access to criminal history summary records maintained by the California Department of Justice is restricted by law to legitimate law enforcement purposes and authorized Applicant Agencies. Individuals have the right to request a copy of their own criminal history record from the department to review for accuracy and completeness. Requests from third parties are not authorized and will not be processed by the department.

To receive a copy of a criminal history record, individuals must submit Live Scan or Manual fingerprints and a $25 fee to the California Department of Justice.

Your applicant fingerprint card must contain your full name, date of birth, sex and return mailing address. Please contact your local law enforcement agency for fingerprinting services. If you live in California, you must use the Live Scan fingerprinting process. If you are having difficulty in obtaining a blank fingerprint card, please contact the Record Review Unit at (916) 227-3849.

Personal checks drawn on a U.S. bank, money order or certified check must be made payable to the “California Department of Justice.” Mail your application, fingerprint card and processing fee to:

Individuals seeking to challenge the accuracy or completeness of the department’s criminal record must submit a “Claim of Alleged Inaccuracy or Incompleteness” to the department. You will receive form (BCII8706) in the mail along with a copy of your criminal history record, if any. Your challenge must specifically state the basis of the inaccuracy or incompleteness and include any available proof or corroboration to substantiate changes to the criminal history record.
